Andrew McGinnis

Creative Director in Learning and Development

How I got here

Like many people in learning and development, I stumbled into this field almost by accident. It all started when a small company needed help expanding their studio capabilities. At the time, I was a motion graphics designer and thought, “Hey, I could do this for a couple of months!” Fast forward 10 years, and I’m still here—and loving it.

Learning and development is an incredible space to grow because it offers endless opportunities to evolve, pivot, learn, and teach. Over the years, I’ve transitioned from creating videos to designing full-scale learning experiences, whether I was the one building them or not. I’ve honed my creative skills to craft content that not only looks great but also fosters an environment where people are inspired to learn.

Too often, learning materials are treated like factory outputs—plugged into a rigid workflow with the goal of producing something digestible. But this is exactly why learning and development is such a fantastic field for creatives and lifelong learners. Companies are eager for professionals with deep, versatile skill sets, and this field rewards those who dive headfirst into every aspect of a project.

Throughout my career, I’ve been part of countless teams across the project lifecycle, and I’ve seen firsthand the value of immersing myself in every role. From learning to communicate across cultures, to leading teams, to being led by others, it’s the intangible skills that truly shape the best learning and development experts, instructional designers, and media creators.

Now, instead of casually sharing my experiences, I want to help others take the next step in their journey—whether that’s evolving into a new kind of expert, embracing the expertise they already have, or simply gaining the confidence to grow. I love seeing people succeed, and I’ve poured my best into every course I create. My goal is to strip away doubt, help you communicate more effectively, and turn the tools you use into a canvas where your ideas can come to life.

What I like

My interests are wonderfully weird—or weirdly wonderful, depending on who you ask! I think they’re fascinating, while others might raise an eyebrow or two. But that’s what makes them fun, right?

I love music, especially ambient sounds and the world of modular synthesis. It’s a deep, creative rabbit hole that’s equal parts technical and artistic. If you’re into music, it’s definitely worth exploring!

I also love magic. Years ago, I met a magician at a dinner party, and by the end of the night, I begged him to teach me everything he knew. He shared a lot, but I’m pretty sure he’s still holding onto a few secrets. (Magicians, am I right?)

Writing is another passion of mine. It’s almost hypnotic—a way to synthesize ideas, explore creativity, and just lose yourself in the process. Most of my writing is personal, but I’ve also dabbled in the dark arts of copywriting. (And yes, I write for courses too—I just wanted to keep things off-topic for at least three paragraphs. Almost made it!)

Finally, I’m obsessed with micro tools. Okay, fine, I made that term up, so don’t Google it. But I believe the future belongs to people who can solve specific problems for specific groups. Whether it’s breaking free from algorithms, writing more fluidly, or organizing your personal library, I think there’s huge potential in creating tools that make life easier, less stressful, and tailored to individual needs.
